Animal Safehouse Founder
Dr. Leandra Preston is a Florida native and Senior Lecturer of Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Central Florida where she has taught for twenty years. A longtime feminist activist and animal advocate, she founded Animal Safehouse in 2008 after reading about a similar program and realizing the unmet need in her community. While she has goals to expand, her wish is for every domestic violence shelter to take pets.
Leandra is a domestic violence survivor and single parent to a 9-year-old daughter. They live in Cocoa Beach with four rescue dogs, a cat, and the occasional foster pet.
